Bring Awareness and Support to Neurodegenerative Diseases through Social Media, Volunteering, and Fundraising.
Our names are Lexi Jones and Bansi Vatliya, the founders and operators of The Neuro Unity Initiative! We are Juniors at Atholton High School in Columbia, Maryland, where we founded and actively run the Psychology-Medicine Club. We started this club during our sophomore year because we wanted to give students a place to learn more about topics like psychology, medicine, and mental health in a way that was fun and that allowed us to give back to our community as well. After running this club for a little over a year, we decided that we wanted to do more. We wanted to create an impact that went beyond just the student community at our high school or even just our city or county. We decided that we wanted to form an initiative of sorts that would allow us to truly make a difference that we could see and share with the people around us. Digging deeper into our own personal interests along with the issues in the world that we knew needed support, we decided upon a focus on Neurodegenerative Diseases because they provide a combination of our shared interests in Neuroscience and Medicine, while also demonstrating a heartbreaking struggle that affects so many people, yet still doesn’t have a cure or very many treatments. This brought us to our passion project, The Neuro Unity Initiative, as we get to learn more about these incredibly harmful yet captivating diseases while constantly finding ways to support research, raise funds, and hopefully reach and educate as many people as possible!

As of right now, there is not a single cure for any neurodegenerative disease, and for many rarer diseases, there is barely any support or treatments available. That is something that we would love to see change in the very near future, but somebody has to fund all of the research expenses. This is why we hold fundraising events and donate 100% of the funds raised to our chosen non-profit organization that aims to fund cures, support patients, and improve treatments!
We believe that in order to fully support something, we should be able to really understand what it is all about; so why shouldn't that standard apply to everyone else? We get the opportunity to research and explore the depths of the diseases and communities that we choose to support, and we believe that in order to ask for your support, we should educate you all as well and garner as much awareness as possible to make a difference!
One of our main goals for this initiative is to create a tangible difference in our community and beyond. We aim to make this change by going out and taking action, spending our time on activities that will directly better society. Whether these may be in the form of engagement with people who have the diseases we highlight or raising funds or support that will go straight to them, our volunteer work aims to make a direct impact on those in need!
From our experience, we have learned that one of the most important aspects in taking on any challenge is finding a true passion, interest, or love for the cause. Without that passion, it can be really difficult to gain the motivation to take action and perservere when things get tough. Luckily, this project is something that we and a lot of our volunteers have put our hearts into, caring deeply about the outcomes that we hope to achieve and the effects that we hope to have on many people!
